Hydrogen Retort Brazing

Hydrogen Retort Brazing

Flux-Free Brazing with Uniform Furnace Heating

Galaxy uses retort-style hydrogen-atmosphere furnaces for aerospace and defense work involving copper and other compatible brazing alloys. This approach takes place inside a sealed furnace chamber containing a controlled hydrogen atmosphere, providing uniform heating and a clean, reducing atmosphere.

Hydrogen retort brazing offers a controlled furnace process for assemblies that benefit from uniform heating and a clean, reducing atmosphere. The furnace brings the assembly through a carefully managed thermal cycle, making the process well suited to parts where even heating can help limit distortion and support consistent joint formation. The hydrogen atmosphere ensures a bright, clean joint.

What Is Hydrogen Retort Brazing?

Hydrogen retort brazing heats the entire assembly through a controlled furnace cycle, allowing the filler alloy to melt and flow into the joint while the base materials remain solid. The hydrogen environment helps reduce surface oxides during heating, which supports clean alloy flow without the use of flux. Because the full component is brought to temperature evenly, the process can be well suited to assemblies with multiple joints, complex geometries, or dimensional requirements that make uneven heating a concern.

Hydrogen retort brazing is ideal for applications where cleanliness is critical. The heating elements of a hydrogen furnace are located outside the unit, eliminating a potential source of contamination. The flux-free process also eliminates flux residue from the finished assembly, reducing the need for post-braze cleaning.

The process can also be combined with annealing when the requirements of the assembly call for both operations within the same furnace cycle.

When Hydrogen Retort Brazing May Be the Right Approach

Hydrogen retort brazing can be a useful option for:

  • Assemblies that benefit from uniform heating across the entire component.
  • Parts where controlling thermal gradients can help reduce distortion.
  • Components with multiple joints that need to be brazed during the same thermal cycle.
  • Assemblies that require a clean, controlled atmosphere and a flux-free finish.
  • Applications where copper or other compatible high-temperature brazing alloys are appropriate.
  • Assemblies that can benefit from combining brazing and annealing within a single furnace cycle.

Process Knowledge From Design Through Production

Galaxy works with customers early to determine whether hydrogen retort brazing fits the assembly. Joint design, materials, filler alloy, thermal cycle, and final performance requirements all affect the result. Our team helps define those variables before production so the furnace process is established around the required metallurgical outcome. We encourage customers to involve our team early in the design process.
